Outlets and Switches That Actually Work
Most homes have outlets and switches that have never been touched since they were installed. Over time, the internal contact springs wear out, connections loosen, and devices that were fine a decade ago become shock hazards or fire risks. A plug that falls out of an outlet, a switch that feels mushy, or an outlet that sparks when you plug in are all signs that something needs attention.
Outlet and switch replacement is straightforward work, but doing it right means more than just swapping the device. The wire connections matter -- pushed-in "backstab" connections that many old outlets use fail far more often than properly screwed connections. I use the screw terminals, torque them correctly, and test every device before leaving.
I handle outlet and switch work throughout Carmichael -- single replacements, whole-home upgrades, USB outlet conversions, dimmer installations, and dead outlet diagnosis. Small jobs and large ones both done right.
Warning Signs to Watch For
Plugs fall out of outlets
Worn contact tension -- shock and fire hazard
Outlet is warm to the touch
Loose wire or overloaded circuit -- address immediately
Sparking when you plug in
Could be normal arcing or a real fault -- have it inspected
Switch feels loose or stiff
Internal mechanism worn -- inexpensive fix before it fails
Light flickers on that switch
Loose connection at switch or fixture -- intermittent arcing
Outlet has only 2 prongs
Ungrounded -- safety and device compatibility issue
Outlet & Switch Services
Standard Outlet Replacement
Old outlets get loose over time and plugs no longer hold firmly -- a shock and fire hazard. I replace worn duplex outlets with new 15A or 20A receptacles, properly wired and grounded.
Outlet Upgrade to USB / USB-C
Combination outlets with built-in USB-A and USB-C ports let you charge phones and tablets directly from the wall without adapter blocks taking up plug space.
Switch Replacement
Worn or faulty light switches replaced. I also upgrade toggle switches to rocker-style for a modern look. Single-pole, 3-way, and 4-way switches all handled.
Dimmer Switch Installation
Dimmers extend bulb life, save energy, and let you set the right mood in any room. I install LED-rated, incandescent, or universal dimmers with correct wiring configuration.
Tamper-Resistant Outlets (TRR)
Required by code in new construction and highly recommended in homes with children. Tamper-resistant outlets block foreign objects with an internal spring mechanism.
Dead Outlet Diagnosis
Outlet stopped working? I trace the circuit, find the cause -- tripped GFCI, loose wire, or failed device -- and fix it rather than guessing.
Outdoor Outlet Installation
Weatherproof in-use covers and GFCI protection for exterior outlets. I install outdoor-rated outlets on covered patios, exterior walls, and garages.
Why My Outlet & Switch Work Holds Up
The difference is in the details -- wire connections, testing, and not cutting corners on the parts that matter.
How It Works
Circuit Off & Verified
Breaker off, voltage tester confirms dead circuit before anything is touched.
Old Device Removed
Existing outlet or switch removed, wiring inspected for condition and correct connections.
New Device Wired
New receptacle or switch wired correctly, connections torqued to spec, ground confirmed.
Tested Under Load
Outlet tested with a plug-in tester for ground, polarity, and proper voltage. Switch tested through full operation.
Plate & Cleanup
Cover plate installed flush, area cleaned. Any issues found during inspection disclosed before leaving.
